2015 Friends of the Library Jonathan Orr Essay Contest

Orr Essay

Are you an undergraduate at Eastern? Then take this opportunity to enter Friends of the Library’s annual Jonathan Orr Essay Contest and a shot at winning some money! This year’s question is:

John Henry Cardinal Newman says in his classic study The Idea of the University (1852) that “This process of training, by which the intellect, instead of being formed or sacrificed to some particular or accidental purpose, some specific trade or profession, or study or science, is disciplined for its own sake, for the perception of its own proper object, and for its own highest culture, is called Liberal Education … and to help forward all students towards it according to their various capacities, this I conceive to be the business of a University.” Comment on the correctness or error of his view that University education in our era should be more liberal arts than professional training.

The essay guidelines are:

  1. We will be looking for well-crafted, grammatically correct essays with proper spelling.
  2. Essay length must be at least 400 words and must not exceed 700 words.
  3. Essays must be the original work of the applicant. Plagiarism in any form will result in disqualification. Please cite any and all resources.

Please electronically submit your essay to Andrea Reed at areed@eastern.edu.
Include your name, year, major and contact information.
Entries will be judged by a panel from Friends of the Library.

Winners will be notified by April 1st (via email) and will be invited to the Friends’ Annual Dinner on April 17th where the prizes will be awarded and the winning essays read.

Good luck!
